2569 Butterlamps Illuminate Mahabodhi Temple on Buddha Purnima Evening

May 12, 2025 — As part of the evening celebrations marking the 2569th Buddha Purnima, a special offering of 2569 Butterlamps was organized on Monday at the sacred premises of the Mahabodhi Temple, near the Butterlamp House area. The event, held in reverence of the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana, brought together a large gathering of devotees from across the world.

Venerable Bhikkhus, Lamas, Nuns, Upasakas, and Upasikas participated in the ceremonial lighting of lamps, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. A significant number of Thai devotees were present, led by Upasika Thosporn Wachiraganphen, the principal sponsor of this year’s celebrations. She, along with her group, offered butter lamps in deep devotion, contributing to the sacred observance.

The event featured diverse forms of chanting, including Theravāda, Mahāyāna, Japanese, and Vietnamese traditions, reflecting the universal message of peace and compassion taught by the Buddha.

Dr. Mahashweta Marathi, Secretary of the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC), addressed the gathering and highlighted the spiritual significance of offering butter lamps on this auspicious occasion. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants and especially thanked Upasika Thosporn Wachiraganphen for her generous support and devotion.

The glowing butterlamps symbolized the light of wisdom dispelling the darkness of ignorance, echoing the timeless teachings of the Buddha that continue to guide millions around the world.
