CANKAMANA

The cankamana is considered to be the seat of lord Buddha and is preserved till today inside the MahaBodhi temple. Though crowded, it is an important peice of pilgrimage for the Buddhists and a must see when you visit Maha Bodhi temple. The Cankamana is located in the Northern precinct of the temple, near the Bodhi tree.
The tale of Buddha is known the world over, the crown prince leaving all he had in search of supreme enlightenment. It is said that Buddha spent his third week of meditation in the same exact place. Inside the temple complex is a raised platform, and this is where Buddha practiced Cankamana or the walking meditation. There are several small stupas and Buddha Statues. The temple also houses a central Buddha statue carved out of black stone and covered in gold. The statue is touching the earth with its right hand, depicting Buddha attaining supreme enlightenment.
